Subscription Tier Selection

You will want to choose the subscription tier that best aligns with your driving habits. Below provides an estimated guideline of the average monthly miles per tier, along with a tool to help determine your estimated monthly kWh:

Estimated kWh calculator:

• Estimate the number of miles driven per month. (Refer to your vehicle app account if not known).
• Divide the estimated number of miles driven by your vehicle’s average efficiency in miles per kWh to get the monthly kWh used. To find your vehicle’s average efficiency, it may be displayed with your vehicle’s energy use data, may be advertised by the manufacturer, or you may use a general US average of 2.9 miles per kWh.
• Multiply by the share of your charging done at home. The US average is 85% of EV charging takes place at home.
  
  

Example:

Joe drives 1,000 miles per month, his vehicle averages 3.24 miles per kWh, and he charges at home 85% of the time.

• 1,000 / 3.24 * 85% = 262.3 kWh/month

Complete the Wish List form if your vehicle is not listed on the “View Compatible Vehicle and Charger Equipment List” dropdown list above. If your vehicle is listed above then you do not need to complete the Wish List form and can enroll in the program immediately.

The EV Charge Smart Plan is an EV residential managed charging program that provides customers with financial savings to charge their electric vehicle (EV) easily and smartly within the convenience of their home through a smartphone app during off-peak hours, 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., when there is less strain on the grid and energy costs are lower. The Plan consists of flexible, subscription-based pricing in which customers pay a fixed monthly fee to cover the discounted cost of energy used during off-peak hours. The plan’s smartphone app will use your preferences to optimize your vehicle’s home charging to occur predominately during off-peak hours.

Off-peak hours are from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. est. daily (including weekends and holidays).

To participate in the plan, you must:

• Be a New York (NY) National Grid residential electric customer on the Standard Residential SC-1 rate. Customers on the Voluntary Time of Use (VTOU) or SC-1C rates are ineligible for the Plan. Please refer to the Delivery Section within your National Grid bill to determine your electricity rate.
• Have a compatible vehicle OR home EV charging station
• EV with an active telematics package OR
• Charging Station that is network enabled.

Enrolling in the Plan is quick and simple. To enroll in the Plan:

1. Download the Charge Smart NY App on your mobile device (Note: Please make sure you download the Charge Smart NY App, as there is also a Charge Smart MA app.
• iOS on Apple App Store
• Android on Google Play Store
2. Log into the app with your existing National Grid login credentials.
3. Select the residential electric billing account where you charge your EV.
4. Connect your Compatible EV or Charging Station by selecting your compatible vehicle make/model and/or charging station.
5. Set your home charging address and confirm your location on the map. Optimize your EV charging within 500 ft of this location to receive off-peak charging rates.
6. Select your off-peak charging subscription plan based on your driving needs.
• Tier 1: $20/month for up to 225 kWh home off-peak charging (Approx. 7,700 annual miles)
• Tier 2: $30/month for up to 365 kWh home off-peak charging (Approx. 12,500 annual miles)
• Note: If you source your electricity from a supplier other than National Grid, your EV Monthly Charge will be $7.86/month for Tier 1 and $10.27/month for Tier 2.
7. Verify Smart Charging is turned on and set your ready by time schedule, via the Smart Tab in the app.

You are ready! Plug in your vehicle and the Charge Smart NY App will do the charging for you predominately during off-peak hours and based on your ready by time.

If you get your electricity supply from another provider (also known as competitive supply or Energy Service Company [ESCO]) you are still eligible to participate in the Charge Smart Plan. In this case, charges and rebates only impact the “delivery” portion of your bill, so your EV Monthly Charge will be $7.86 or $10.27 per month for tier 1 or tier 2, respectively.

National Grid’s off-peak hours are 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., which is when demand for electricity is at its lowest, meaning that EV owners that charge off-peak are helping reduce the cost of electricity for everyone and improving resiliency of the electric grid. This is increasingly important as EVs become more popular across New York.

The plan is flexible and allows you to stop participating at any time. EV Charge Smart Plan pricing will be applied for the remainder of the calendar month, and your upcoming electricity bills will reflect accordingly. To unenroll from the Plan:

1. In the app Dashboard tab, tap the gear icon and then tap “Personal Details.”
2. Tap “Unenroll from this Program” and then “Proceed with unenrollment” on the next page.
   
   

Before unenrolling, please reach out to chargesmartny@ev.energy to let us know what we can do differently to improve the Charge Smart Plan for you. Your feedback is important to us, and we will take into consideration as we continue to enhance the plan.

There are two (2) ways to save in the Plan, a one-time participation incentive and annual financial savings.

Participation Incentive

A $150 one-time incentive will be awarded for actively participating in the program for a minimum of three (3) months.

Financial Savings

Customers can save up to 30% annually on your home EV charging.*

* When compared to billed charges for EV off-peak charging on the program vs. standard SC-1 rates. Actual savings may vary based upon several factors including region, time of year, how you charge your vehicle, and whether you get your energy supply from National Grid or another provider.

The plan provides flexible, subscription-based pricing in which there are two (2) monthly subscription plans, Tier 1 and Tier 2, described below, to choose from. For additional details about selecting or switching your Tier on the smartphone app, please refer to the EV Charge Smart Plan User Guide.

Your subscription takes effect on the 1^st day of the following month after you enroll in the plan. Note that once you complete your enrollment through the Charge Smart NY app, you will start experiencing the benefits of the smart scheduling, where the app controls your vehicle’s charging to meet your preferences and occur during off-peak hours. However, the billing and saving part of the plan do not start until the 1^st day of the following month.

Additional subscription fees may apply and are based on your vehicle manufacturer.

No, any remaining kWhs not used in the month do not roll over into the following month.

The price of your subscription will be added to your monthly electricity bill and split into the two components similar to the way all other household electricity is billed, delivery and supply, pending you are National Grid supply customer. There will also be an EV Savings line item on your bill reflecting the monthly EV charging savings you experienced by participating in the Plan vs. charging on standard rates.

EV Charge Smart NY subscriptions go into effect the first calendar day of the following month after enrollment and run from the first of the month to the last day of the month which may not align with your regular National Grid billing cycle. The EV Charge smart fees will appear on your National Grid bill between two and five weeks after the calendar month ends, depending upon your billing cycle; and therefore, the charges for the EV Smart Charge Plan will likely not align with the other charges on your bill, as they are based on different time frames.

With Smart Charging, the Charge Smart NY app connects to your vehicle or charger and automatically shifts your charging to off-peak hours, while accommodating your “Ready by Time”. The app sends start and stop charging commands to your vehicle or charger to accomplish this. Smart Charging is enabled by default when you create your EV Charge Smart NY Plan account. You may turn Smart Charging off in the app’s Smart Tab. Additional customization details can be found in the EV Charge Smart Plan User Guide.

The app will shift charging predominately to off-peak hours when you have the smart schedule set-up. However, some charging may occur when you first plug-in your vehicle, until the app polls (reaches out to) the EV or EVSE initiating stop and start charging commands. 

To prevent charging commencing upon plug-in and to optimize off-peak charging, open the app immediately after you plug-in your vehicle. This action will trigger the app to poll (reach out to) your EV or EVSE. 

If you need to charge your EV right away and cannot wait for Smart Charging to charge your vehicle during off-peak hours, tap the Boost button within the Dashboard tab to charge immediately. Note that depending upon the time of day you are charging, on-peak rates may apply.

National Grid and ev.energy do not see or store your EV and/or home charger username and password. Once you enter your username and password, we instantly exchange them with the vehicle and/or home charger manufacturer for a secure token that allows us to be able to continue to access your account to optimize your charging throughout the program. This token is stored securely and encrypted in ev.energy’s cloud platform, hosted by Amazon Web Services.

Regardless of whether you are connecting to the Charge Smart NY app via a home charger or your EV, providing National Grid and ev.energy with this information allows us to automatically charge your vehicle during off-peak hours when Smart Charging is turned on, track the amount of charging you’ve done against your subscription tier, and helps us effectively respond to any inquiries or questions about your charging experience. However, you will only need to connect one piece of compatible hardware to participate in the Charge Smart Plan.

Once you disconnect your EV, ev.energy will no longer be able to read the charging on your vehicle. Any data from previous charging sessions will be combined with other customers’ data. The aggregate data will be analyzed by National Grid to assess the benefits of this program.

Compatible Equipment availability is dependent upon manufacturer technology and mobile app integration which communicates with onboard vehicle telematics. Compatible Equipment will be added as manufacturers make battery and charging data available. 

If your EV and Charging Station are not compatible with the Plan you can add your information to the EV Charge Smart Wish List to:

• Identify that you are interested in learning more on how to purchase and have installed a compatible charging station or
• To have your vehicle and charging station information considered for future compatibility.
