It’s the perfect time to upgrade to high-efficiency heat pumps. The business world is trending toward a more sustainable future. Heat pumps are an energy-efficient, all-in-one solution for heating and cooling. Heat pump systems often require a smaller footprint and can be installed with or without ductwork. With a wide variety of choices, there’s a heat pump system that works for commercial and municipal buildings of almost any size including offices, schools, libraries, hotels, restaurants and more.
New in 2026! For large buildings, Clean Heat is becoming the Heating Electrification Program. We are pleased to continue supporting customers making a transition to clean, efficient heat pump heating solutions. We will offer incentives and services through comprehensive programs designed to meet the needs of each sector.
Programs for Large Commercial and Industrial Customers
Heating Electrification Program assists customers who are electrifying their space conditioning and domestic hot water.
Eligible technologies:
- Air source and ground source heat pumps for space and water heating
- Energy recovery ventilators installed with qualifying heat pumps
- Heat pump chillers and heat recovery chillers
- Building envelope improvements paired with heating electrification
Program requirements:
- Customer must be a National Grid electric ratepayer
- Project must be full load heating electrification*
- Project must be in an existing building*
- Equipment must meet minimum performance standards
- Pre-inspections and post inspections are required
Beneficial Electrification Program offers incentives to projects that electrify process heating loads, such as heat recovery and custom process electrification. All commercial and industrial National Grid electric customers are eligible to participate.

Six key benefits to heat pumps:

Energy Efficiency
Heat Pumps are an energy-efficient alternative to traditional HVAC solutions like furnaces and air conditioners. They don’t use fossil fuels and can be three to four times more efficient than furnaces and help you lower your overall energy usage.

All-in-one Solution
Heat pumps are an all-in-one solution for both heating and cooling. They work to keep things warm during cooler months, and cool during warmer months. Buildings use one system, rather than multiple, to maintain comfortable indoor climates year-round. As a result, heat pump solutions can potentially reduce your overall system footprint.

Clean Solution
As more companies focus on reducing carbon emissions, it’s important to look for cleaner, more sustainable solutions. Since they don’t use fossil fuels as an input, high-efficiency heat pumps offer cleaner heating and cooling and emit fewer greenhouse gases than legacy HVAC systems.

Flexibility
There are often both ducted and non-ducted options available. This means you may be able to install heat pumps while using existing ductwork—saving your time and resources on your installation. There are several different solutions available, so you can choose the heat pump technology that works best for your business.

Comfort
For everyday operations, heat pumps provide a comfortable environment by heating and cooling individual spaces or whole buildings. Zone control allows for greater control and more uniform temperature distribution.

Health
Many heat pumps can improve indoor air quality with built-in HEPA filtration systems that remove pollen, dust, and other allergens. And because heat pumps are emissions-free and require no fuel storage, they are a cleaner, simpler solution year-round.
